Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
